Sewing Basics: Make your own Apron

$175.00

This Sewing 101 class will cover how to use a home sewing machine and teach students how to complete a basic project: making your own canvas apron.

Students will learn how to take their own measurements, how to translate these measurements to fabric and make adjustments, and how to cut fabric and prepare it for sewing. We will also go over the basics of using a home sewing machine - how to get set up, sewing workstation ergonomics, how to thread a machine, how to wind a bobbin, using a straight stitch, how to add a basic patch pocket, how to attach twill tape with an X box stitch and one seam finish (double fold).

For this project, we will be using a plain, sturdy, heavyweight canvas and cotton twill tape. Students will be given care instructions for their apron. Your finished apron will be perfect for the kitchen or grill - or gift it to a friend! You're also welcome to wear your apron at future Fleur classes.

All supplies are included in the workshop fee, including use of our sewing machines. Here's how that breaks down:

- $15 for 2 yards of 100% cotton duck canvas

- $5 for 3 yards of 100% cotton twill tape

- $2 for 500 yards of heavy duty all purpose thread

- $30 for 3 hours of usage of our sewing supplies and notions (iron, ironing board, cutting tools, pins, pincushions, chalk, rulers, measuring tape)

- $20 for 3 hours of usage of our sewing machines

If you already own a sewing machine and would like to practice on it, you are welcome to bring your own. Due to the heavy duty nature of the fabric we will be working with, we recommend bringing extra needles for your machine.
